It is widely accepted that over the next 2-3 years there will be an
explosion in the number of wireless users accessing services. Mobile
network infrastructures will need to develop their systems to support
location-awareness and higher bandwidth. GSM to 2.5G
to 3G
The current GSM network for mobiles allow a transfer rate of only
9.6 Kbps. The next generation networks, GPRS (2.5G), will allow rates
up to 115Kbps (DLJ). Currently, some operators are rolling out 2.5G
networks that will transmit at a rate 5 times faster than what is
possible through their current GSM networks. Additional European operators
are expected to be roll out 2.5G networks during the last quarter
of 2000 and 2001.
An important factor as the market moves from GSM to 2.5G will be the
change from circuit switched data transmissions to packet switched
transmissions. This will allow a user to only pay for the data received
rather than for the airtime and thus they will ‘always be on’. |
